The Story
100 Years
1926–2026 In 1919, only weeks after the Armistice, Kansas City was asked to build a memorial worthy of the 441 of its own who never came home from the Great War. The city answered in under two weeks — more than $2.5 million, most of it in single dollars, raised by ordinary people who wanted the sacrifice remembered in stone, not in silence. On November 11, 1926, before a crowd of 150,000, President Calvin Coolidge dedicated the Liberty Memorial. Five years earlier, on this same ground, the commanders of five Allied nations had stood together for the first time in history. The 217-foot tower rose above the city, and at night its flame burned — a promise that what was given between 1914 and 1918 would not be forgotten. This photograph was made in the centennial year. A hundred Novembers later, the memorial still keeps its watch over Kansas City, and its flame still burns. In black and white, the tower and the fountain lie reflected in still water — 1926 and 2026 meeting in a single frame. One hundred years. One city's promise, kept. This edition of 25 is made from that frame.
